Final Year Project : Bottle Filling System Using Fuzzy Logic


In the this blog post I would like to share my final year project that I did during my bachelors degree. The topic of the project was "Bottle Filling System Using Fuzzy Logic".

The aim of the project was to design, simulate, and implement a bottle filling system by using the fuzzy logic control technology that fills the desired amount of the liquid in to the bottle in an excellent accuracy with respect to the machines available in the industry.

Following were the main objectives of the project.

I.   Conduct a survey on existing systems, related industries and possible improvements.
II.  Design the bottle filling system.
III.  Use Fuzzy logic to improve the system.
IV. Simulate the bottle filling system.
V.  Implement the bottle filling system.


I used NXP's "LPC1769 LPCXpresso" mini development board that is equipped with an ARM Cortex M3 based LPC1769 microcontroller for this project. The bottle filling machine is controlled by a C program located inside this microcontroller.

The bottle filling system consists of two main subsystems called tank subsystem and the bottle
filling subsystem. The bottle filling subsystem consists of a fuzzy logic controller while the tank
subsystem consists of an on-off controller. The on-off controller of the tank subsystem is responsible for maintaining the liquid level at the desired level. The fuzzy logic controller of the bottle filling subsystem is responsible for filling the liquid into the bottle up to the desired level with an excellent accuracy.



Brief summary of what included in the report:

First, of all the report contains a brief introduction about bottle filling systems that are in use in the industry and the main problem with them. Then the aim and the objectives of the project are briefly stated.

Then, under the literature review section the fuzzy logic controllers are explained in detail. It includes the explanations on operation of fuzzifier, inference engine and defuzzifier.

The next section describes how the problem with the bottle filling systems is addressed and the work plan.

Next section discusses the results of the project. First, it states the information gathered during the survey. Then, the results of designing and simulation of the bottle filling system are explained.

Then, information about the implementation of bottle filling system is explained in detail.

Finally the report states the important references that are required to trace this project progress report.
